ACADEMIC ADVISING HANDBOOK - ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES
ACADEMIC ALERT SYSTEM
The Academic Alert System is a web-based application that supports communication among instructors, advisors, and students. The purpose of the Academic Alert System is to improve the overall academic success of students by improving communication among students, instructors and advisors; reducing the time required for students to be informed of their academic status; and informing students of actions necessary by them in order to meet the academic requirements in their courses.
LEAD: LEARNING ENHANCEMENT ACROSS DISCIPLINES
LEAD provides learning assistance for over 45 courses in the form of collaborative learning centers and drop-in tutoring. It begins the second week of classes and ends on the Thursday of the last week of class.
WRITING CENTER: 113 CAMPUS SUPPORT FACILITY
The Missouri S&T Writing Center, located in the Moeller Writing Studio at 113 Campus Support Facility, is a free academic resource for students at Missouri S&T. The Writing Center provides state-of-the-art computers, all the latest software, a staff of highly trained, motivated, and friendly peer writing tutors, and a technical editor.
MATH DEPARTMENT HELP
The Math Department has various support services, including Math Help Room, which provides assistance for Math 2-22 and statistics; Math anxiety and Calculus information. All of these resources can be accessed from the above link, under Current Courses.
UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING OFFICE
Any undergraduate student can schedule a one-on-one academic consultation with one of the professional advisors in the Undergraduate Advising Office. Students at any level are encouraged to seek academic consulting to develop skills that can improve areas of their lives such as time/self management, note taking, study skills and test taking. Students can schedule an appointment by calling 573-341-4424.
ON-TRACK ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAM
The On-Track Academic Success Program is aimed at increasing at-risk students’ academic and personal success. On-Track accomplishes this through refining student’s study skills, self management skills, and knowledge of campus resources and by facilitating the formation of stronger relationships with professors, classmates, and other sources of support. Participants engage in the program through seminars, one-on-one meetings, and supplemental activities tailored to a student's specific needs.
On-Track is a small time commitment, taking only 12-15 hours throughout the course of the entire semester. Seminars are roughly an hour each. One-on-one or group meetings take about half an hour a piece. Each participant is encouraged to complete up to 3 hours of prescribed activities. Because the time commitment is so small, attendance is crucial at each event.
The LASSI is a 10-scale, 80-item assessment of students' awareness about and use of learning and study strategies related to skill, will and self-regulation components of strategic learning. The focus is on both covert and overt thoughts, behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that relate to successful learning and that can be altered through educational interventions. Research has repeatedly demonstrated that these factors contribute significantly to success in college and that they can be learned or enhanced through educational interventions such as learning and study skills courses.
